Welcome here!

A brief welcome.

Welcome here!
Early January 2024 when it snowed all week long.

What is this thing? A blog? How Y2K! A type of record keeping? Absolutely. A letter? Sort of. How I wish I could hand-write letters to each of our loved-ones who take the time to read this.

To kick us off, I've composed a bit of a teaser... Much more to come in later posts!

One year ago we bought our home, Goodwinslow. Our crumbling, strange, wonderful home. As the previous owner has often said, stepping foot on this property is transportive… it’s like stepping out of time. Though we're 20-minutes from downtown Memphis, we now live in a woodland, ringed by forest. Our own little oasis in the city.

Goodwinslow is believed to be the oldest home in Memphis’ Raleigh neighborhood. William Washington Goodwin, a local lawyer, gradually built the structure between 1875 and 1900. In the 1970s it found its way onto the National Historic Register of Homes where it remains.

Goodwinslow is a whimsical blend of architectural styles— Italian villa and Medieval Germanic Castle, with both Victorian and Edwardian English features throughout. As the story goes, Washington was inspired by his travels and came up with something totally original. The house is masonry construction with no structural wood. There are two towers, seven fireplaces, and seven balconies.

Yes, it’s an absolute dream. And an often-overwhelming project that we have barely begun. We hope you’ll follow along as we make this incredible house our home.
